Prof. Dr. Beatrix Borchard is a German musicologist and author, concentrating on the life and works of, among others, Robert and Clara Schumann, Pauline Viardot-Garcia, Amalie and Joseph Joachim and Adriana Hölszky, as well as the role of music in the process of Jewish acculturation. Born in 1950, she studied musicology, German philology, and history in Bonn and Berlin. Her habilitation work was a study of Amalie and Joseph Joachim. She is the editor of the Viardot-Garcia-Studien, the online lexicon MUGI (Musik und Gender im Internet), and, together with Kerstin Schüssler-Bach, Brahms-Studien.
Beatrix Borchard taught musicology for ten years at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin (now Universität der Künste Berlin), and worked for the Goethe-Institut primarily in China, Portugal and Romania. Since 2002, she has taught at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. She is the author of numerous radio features, is a frequent speaker, and has made two films: one on Clara Schumann, and the other on the subject of “Hausmusik.” A documentary on the sisters Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot-Garcia is in preparation.
